What a fun project. Jhon and Betsy had recently moved from New York, where Jhon worked in the film business and Betsy was an artist. Both are modern design buffs, and in fact they moved so that Betsy could become the Marketing Director for Room & Board. As their house was build in the early 1900s, our challenge was to satiate the clients' modern desires while being respectful to both that era and the neighborhood.

We created a long layered deck across the back that was as much a design solution for their elderly Dalmatian, Olive, as it was an aesthetic gesture. Her hips were making it impossible for her to navigate the previous, steeper steps... the gradual decline worked for Olive, and it was such a great moment to see her have access to the backyard again. We also crafted a custom fountain of steel that fit inside the deck. The sound of water can be such a soothing element.

For the two young girls of the house we created a small play area, which included a small fort with walls made of canvas. Designed in the hopes of encouraging creativity and imagination, it features a curtain that can partially cover the front wall for impromptu puppet shows. With removable Velcro segments for 'windows' and a roof, the fort folds up for easy storage. Also for the girls is the 'Un-Sandbox Pea Gravel Etch-A-Sketch', featuring painted rocks for them to 'draw' with. It was so great getting to think freely about how we could create things for children. The entire project turned out to be a magical experience, and we're glad to have been a part of it!
